Houston Astros swiftly overturned Detroit Tigers on Monday night and secured a 5-4 lead. Yuli Gurriel made two hits and two runs.
In the first inning, Detroit starter Edwin Jackson allowed four runs by Astros to lead with 4-1. Houston starter Wade Miley allowed a season-high ten hits, one of them was an extra base. He allowed three runs in 5 2/3 innings and also eliminated eight walks
Astros lead by three runs when Detroit’s Ronny Rodriguez hit a single in the sixth, then Demeritte added one in the seventh to narrow the lead by 5-4. Will Harris saw the threat Demeritte was posing, and he struck him out in the eighth to preserve the lead.
Roberto Osuna gave up a hit in a scoreless ninth and made his 28th saves. Astros now have two consecutive wins after five straight loss.
Detroit hitter Miguel Cabrera was ejected for arguing about the balls. He also had two hits and a run before he was removed.
Robinson Chirinos and Yordan Alvarez also drove runs for Astros. Shortstop Carlos Correa left the field in the first inning due to back pain.
Jackson allowed five runs in which four were earned in just six innings. This was his first loss with Tigers; he had won the first two starts.
In the first inning, Tigers lead 1-0 after RBI by Cabrera. Alvarez double scored to tie it up. Gurriel doubled to the center out of reach by Victor Reyes and gave Houston a 3-1 lead.
Demeritte and Cabrera hit two straight singles in the third inning. Demeritte then scored a sacrifice fly by Dixon to cut the lead to 4-2.
Chirinos added a run on a sacrifice fly with one out in the fifth. In the sixth, Rodriguez homered to center field and gave Tiger a run. Hector Rondon gave Tiger another run in the seventh to cut the lead to 5-4.
Detroit RHP Spencer Turnbull (3-11, 3.74 ERA) will start on Tuesday night game. In his last start, he allowed six hits and three runs. He also struck out 8 in 5 innings.
Astros RHP Aaron Sanchez will start on Tuesday. In his last game, he had seven hits and allowed six runs in 5 1/3 innings.
