Joc Pederson homered to give NL West-leading Los Angeles Dodgers a 9-0 lead over San Diego Padres.
Walker Buehler struck out 11 and allowed four hits in six innings. He was excellent right from the start giving up only three baserunners to reach the scoring position. He is 4-0 with .64 ERA in four career appearances against Padres.
Manuel Margot made a leaping catch over the wall in the center field in the sixth. He robbed Cody Bellinger two-run homer which would have given him a lead in MLB with 43.
Pederson hit his career-high 27th homer in the third inning off rookie Cal Quantrill. Both Matt Beaty and Enrique Hernandez hit RBI singles in the fourth; then Dodgers drove five runs in the fifth. They followed up with seven consecutive batters with one out. Corey Seager and Will Smith each hit bases loaded two singles, and Hernandez added an RBI double.
Dodgers’ catcher Russell Martin pitched in the ninth; he gave up a leadoff to double to Padres rookie. Quantrill gave up eight runs and eight hits in 4 1/3 innings, walked three and struck out one.
Dodgers’ RHP Kenta Maeda will start the series finale on Wednesday night against Padres. He is 1-1 with a 4.70 ERA in Four starts against Padres.
