The Evolution of Cosmetic Dentistry and Facial Sculpting

Dr. Nina Bal

Dental Surgeon and Facial Aesthetics Practitioner Dr. Nina Bal on current practices in the industry.

Cutting-edge innovations might be synonymous with the world of technology but has increasingly pervaded other industries in the last decade or so. The beauty industry is no exception. With time, more and more resources are poured into solving the only dilemma that seems to plague the industry – how to preserve youth. Age-defying makeup, wrinkle-free solutions and other tricks to mask the monstrous entity of age have been flooding the markets for decades. Recently though, minor medical procedures have become the norm and of late, non-invasive procedures have become all the rage.

This is where Dr. Nina Bal comes in. You might know her as the official cosmetic dentist on Season 2 of UK’s successful makeover reality show – Bodyfixers. However, the journey that got her to the show, is just as impressive as her work in the field of cosmetic dentistry and facial sculpting.

Dr. Nina Bal

As a child, Bal was fascinated by medicine and harboured dreams of becoming a doctor. As she grew older, she also began to nurture a passion for beauty, aesthetics and fashion. In a bid to marry these two big passions of her life, she chose to pursue dentistry after graduating high school. She would go on to graduate at the top of her year with distinction (BDS magna cum laude), which she would follow up with a one-year Postgraduate diploma in Cosmetic Dentistry and Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry in London.

Armed with her impressive certifications, she set out to make her mark in the world of cosmetic dentistry. A decade later, she would have collected many more accolades, and built up a loyal base of patients who would swear by her expertise. The fact that the techniques that Dr. Bal practiced were mostly non-invasive, unlike plastic surgery and other similar procedures, seemed to have struck a chord with a larger section of the paying public.

Her ‘less is more’ philosophy drew even the skeptics in, who would leave convinced she had the ‘Midas Touch’. By strategically injecting minute amounts of botox around specific facial points, Dr. Bal could ‘sculpt’ the contours of the face and deliver results almost immediately. She also uses dermal fillers, chemical peels and skin rejuvenation techniques to align the contours of a face according to the ‘Golden Ratio’ – a mathematical algorithm that affects the perception of attractiveness. In her own words, “people come to me and say I don’t know what the problem is but there is something about my face that is not right. I literally calculate the golden ratio of their face! I am of the opinion that for the human eye beauty lies in symmetry and with my experience I know what they need to achieve a good look. You wouldn’t believe the difference some minor tweaks can make – some of it is done literally in a few minutes!”

Her contribution to the world of facial aesthetics made her an Instagram celebrity, which in turn placed her in the radar of the producers of Bodyfixers. Her work on the show is helping her further her cause and assisting several people with self-image issues and even those undergoing gender-reassignment surgeries. Dr. Bal takes great pride in being able to make a positive change in the lives of so many, and be a part of their transformative journeys. “For me, it is a thrill to give my clients the gift of looking young and feeling great again. Their happiness and gratitude is what fulfils me and gives me a reason to excel,” says Dr Nina.
