Teardown Of iPhone 11 Pro Shows Smaller Logic Board And Larger Battery

To find more about the differences with last year’s phones, iFixit has disassembled Apple’s new iPhone models. They did a live stream video of the iPhone 11 Pro dissection and prepared a guide for the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

The first main difference is that the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max have much larger batteries than the iPhone XS and iPhone XS.
The device is .4 mm thicker and the screen is .25 mm thinner on the iPhone 11 Pro Max. As John Gruber predicted, ditching 3D Touch from the iPhone lineup makes the screen a bit slimmer. 3D Touch needed an extra layer under the display to measure pressure on the screen.

That might seem a small difference, however, it allows some space for the battery. The same single-cell L-shaped design is seen in the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone XS. However, the Max version has been upgraded to use the same single-cell design instead of two cells.

As a result, the iPhone 11 Pro Max has now a 3,969 mAh battery compared to a 3,179 mAh battery in the iPhone XS Max. It shows an almost 25% year by year improvement for the Max battery.

Those hardware tweaks combined with a more efficient A13 system-on-a-chip make considerable battery life improvements for the user. Apple says that compared to the previous generation, the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max last up to 4 hours and 5 hours longer respectively.
Another news says that the camera module is much larger in this year’s new device. Apple was able to put a third camera by decreasing the size of the logic board.

The same dual-layer design is seen in the logic board which was first introduced with the iPhone X. Although Apple had lawsuits against Qualcomm, the modem in the iPhones 11 Pro is still produced by Intel.

The things that iFixit could figure out yet is how much RAM there is. Steve Troughton-Smith thinks there might be 2GB of RAM for the camera which you wouldn’t notice on benchmarks.

Also, now there are two battery connectors rather than one. It’s difficult to say whether the second connector has been included for bilateral wireless charging or not. There could be many different reasons why it is there. There is a rumor that Apple wanted to include reverse wireless charging but dismissed the feature at the last stage.

Overall, the iPhone got a repairability score of 6 out of 10 from iFixit. Also, t he iPhone XS models got a 6 out of 10 rating.
