In the summer of 2018, Nabil Fekir was at Ligue 1 club, Lyon. When The Reds pursued the player, Lyons was willing to hand its captain over for a €59 million deal. However, the transfer collapsed midway due to Fekir’s previous knee injury.
Fekir had ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) in 2015 while on duty with France. According to the French player, his Clairefontaine medical report proved that his knee was just fine. In regard to this, the player feels that Liverpool was just looking for an excuse for the failed move and his injury had to be that excuse.
In his opinion, Nabil Fekir feels that if his knee had been the issue, Jean-Michel, Lyon’s captain wouldn’t have kept him. The player also passed his medical before joining Real Betis this summer which also adds weight to his claim.
Back then, there were rumors that the failed Anfield move was also because of the player’s family, a statement that had hurt the Lyon captain. Luckily for the player, he has turned a new page in his career at Benito Villamarin. He has had a good start in the first three La Liga appearances having scored two goals.
According to Jean-Pierres Bernes, Nabil’s former agent, the player’s claims are not true. He attributes the failed Liverpool to two reasons which are; the knee injury and the appearance of a foreign pseudo-representative who wanted the negotiations reviewed while the parties were at the signing stage.
Who to believe? We don’t know! What we do know is that Fekir is doing just fine wherever he is and so is Liverpool. Who knows, maybe Liverpool will pursue the player yet again but that’s highly unlikely.
