From this season onwards, Russians will be able to watch every single regular and playoffs NHL games. The NHL will now be streaming live in Russian after making a streaming agreement with Yander.
In this decade, there has been good cooperation between the Russian Federation and NHL than ever. The collaboration has gone to the extent of staging an NHL games in Russia, but the broadcast agreement came first.
NHL executive vice president of international and media strategy Davis Proper said that it’s a game-changer given that they are dipping their toe in Russian market. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman also agreed that the agreement offers NHL vast market.
In the previous agreement, the NHL allowed 15 games to be broadcasted in Russia. The goal was to have a widow for Russian stars such as Tarasenko Alex Ovechkin, Evgeny Malkin, Nikita Kucherov and Andrei Vasilevskiy to have a positive impact on fans back at home and probably inspire in building another generation of players.
Proper also acknowledged that the agreement isn’t meant to cut into KHL market but to help Russian based league get more exposure.
