It looks clearer that WWE is depending on Stone Cold Steve Austin to boost ratings and attendance when he returns to Raw on 9/9 in Madison Square Garden.
On Monday, WrestlingNews.co had announced that WWE is doing two nights of TV at The Garden with Raw on 9/9 and SmackDown Live on 9/10. This would be the first TV tapings in that building since 2009 when John Cena and The Undertaker headlined vs. D-X (Shawn Michaels and Triple H) vs. Chris Jericho and Big Show in a Triple Threat Tag Team Match.
Professional wrestling journalist and historian Dave Meltzer confirmed in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter the reason why they are bringing in Austin is because they have not sold out MSG.
The return of Austin will help boost ticket sales and they are expected to sell out. Though there are still some tickets available as of this writing. Meltzer indicated that WWE feels it is important to sell out MSG because they are trying to keep AEW from running that building.
On the other hand, The Undertaker is advertised for the 9/11 SmackDown Live in MSG. We are expecting to see more of Austin in the near future. He has said that he is open to doing more reunion shows if the Raw Reunion becomes a yearly thing. Austin is also in the new ads for Friday Night SmackDown on FOX.
