Diaz was allowed to prove his ability; he recovered from his recent downfall that made Mets six runs advantage over Nationals to disappear. Then on Friday, Diaz rose and saved Mets against Phillies, Mets offense was stable and supported him.
Mets won 5-4 against Phillies in the series opener at Citi Field. Alonso dug into the box. He loaded the bases with two outs in the ninth inning. In the third, Alonso drew a walk and plated Lagares for the game-winning run.
Before the winning run, Alonso and Wilson Ramos threw RBI in the eighth to break the 2-2 tie with Mets two winning runs. Edwin Diaz shut the door for Phillies Seth Lugo and Mickey Callaway go-to reliever for the ninth inning. Diaz posted a 5.61 ERA in his 59th relief appearance of the year. He smashed into Logan Morrison while swinging to begin his ninth inning.
Diaz also allowed two runs shot that landed in the left-field and tied the game 4-4 in the ninth. He made his seventh blown save and had the seventh loss of the year. The two-run shot he allowed were Diaz 14th home permitted to run this season. The massive inning also lifted him to 5.88 ERA which is his highest in the season.
